White Earthenware, underglaze, glaze

The works Vanadinite I & II, made from white paper clay and fired to earthenware temperatures, were developed from a concept derived from the title of this exhibition, ‘In Conflict of Green’.  The iconography speaks of our environment, and the bold red matt glaze is taken from Vanadinite, a rare, naturally occurring mineral usually found in beautiful red hexagonal crystals. The contrast of the raw white paper clay against the red glaze interior is simple yet profound.

Vanadium is one of the leading industrial ores used to store renewable energy and is found in Australia among other abundant reserves of critical minerals needed for clean energy technology.

With the world on the cusp of the next industrial revolution, the paradox is that we must mine up to 35 critical minerals to address the climate crisis, increasing the threat to biodiversity. Without careful planning, these new threats could surpass those avoided by climate change mitigation.
